Women’s peace rallies were held throughout the 1980s as the Cold War intensified. One of the best-known, the Greenham Common Women’s Peace Camp at the Royal Air Force and United States Air Force base in Berkshire, United Kingdom, existed from 1981 to 2000.
This badge celebrates the Pine Gap Women’s Peace Camp held in November 1983 at Pine Gap, the United States-Australian defence intelligence facility near Alice Springs. The camp was attended by more than 800 women who demonstrated against the presence of a United States base in Australia.
The donor of this badge, Diana Pittock, writes that Australian women were even involved in the protests overseas, and
who did not go to the protests wore badges about them at peace rallies
in our cities. I wore them at various rallies, including the Palm
Sunday peace rallies in Melbourne each year.
