Equality is a key principle of human rights. In 2008, discrimination against Australian same-sex couples was removed from most Commonwealth laws. This included laws about taxation, superannuation, pharmaceutical benefits, aged care, veterans’ entitlements, workers’ compensation and employment entitlements. In 2013 the Sex Discrimination Act 1984 (Cth) was amended, making it unlawful to discriminate against a lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, gender diverse or intersex (LGBTI) person on the basis of their sexual orientation, gender identity and intersex status. Same-sex couples are now recognised within the definition of ‘marital or relationship status’.
However, same-sex couples do not have the right to marry. Trans, gender diverse and intersex people can find it difficult to get legal recognition of their sex in official documents. And LGBTI people can still experience harassment and hostility—even violence—in everyday life. This badge is a visible expression of lesbian self-worth and dignity.
