Thursdays in Black is an international human rights campaign initiated by the World Council of Churches in the 1980s as a peaceful protest and expression of solidarity.

Thursdays in Black raises awareness of oppression and violence against women, include domestic violence, sexual assault, murder, sexual harassment, discrimination, prostitution and pornography. It traces its roots back to the 1970s and draws inspiration from groups such as the Mothers of the Disappeared (Madres de la Plaza de Mayo) in Argentina, Black Sash in South Africa and the Women in Black movements in Bosnia and Israel.

The donor of this badge, John Ellis, writes:

As many of my female friends of the left were involved in the feminist movement of the 1960s, I whole-heartedly supported them in their fight for equal rights and equal pay. I wore this badge to women’s movement functions.
